Passion is the engine that powers your business. Without it, you will not be able to sustain yourself or grow. What does that mean for you? It means that uncovering your passion and turning it into a business is the key to success.
What is a Passion?
Passion is a collection of the things you’ve done in your life that have made you feel the most fulfilled. It is what gives you endless energy, a strong, almost single-minded focus, and the willpower to get through even the hardest problems.
How to Uncover Your Passion?
You need to look inside yourself to find your passion.
I’ve found there are two questions that will help you think through what your passion is.
The first question is, “If you had all the time and money in the world, how would you spend your time?”
It seems like a simple question, but many people find it hard to answer because they’ve never thought about it.
The second question is, “What makes you the happiest or makes you feel the most complete?”
You might think that we all know what makes us happy, but it’s interesting that so many people don’t know what makes them happy because they’re so busy with their daily lives that they’ve never stopped to look inside themselves.
So, figuring out what gives you a deep sense of fulfilment, what energizes you, and what brings you a lot of joy will begin to point you in the direction of your passion.
Passion alone can’t make you successful, and not all passions can be turned into businesses. There are a few things you need to do in order to uncover your passion and turn it into a business.
For a passion to become a business, it must be combined with the right skills, training, and positioning.
1. Figure out what you are good at.
What skills, talents, and experiences do you have that you can use to create a niche in the market?

Think about the skills that have helped you get where you are.
Think about the jobs you’ve had, the volunteer work you’ve done, and the schooling you’ve completed. Which jobs did you do well, and which ones did you like the most? Don’t forget how hard things have been for you. Which ones did you finish that made you feel good about yourself or got people to notice you?
Think about what activities or skills give you a sense of power.
Try to pay attention to when you feel energized or successful. Those times could be when you’re using your natural skills.
Think about what you’re most interested in. If you want to learn more about something just because you’re interested in it, that could be a good sign that you’re good at it.
What do you naturally do?
It’s easy to overlook your natural talents, especially if you think that everyone can do them or just brush them off as something you’ve always been good at. Just because something comes naturally to you doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come naturally to others or that your talents aren’t valuable.
When something comes naturally to you, it’s easy to forget about it. Keep an ear out for compliments you would normally ignore. They might help you find out what your real strengths are.
Pay attention to how you spend your free time.
You can learn a lot about your natural strengths and skills by thinking about your hobbies and the things you do naturally.
Think about five things you like doing and why you like them. Write them down and make a note of specific tasks and why you like doing them. Make it a challenge to really think about why you like them.
2. What are the trends in the market?
You also need to keep an eye on the market. No matter how much you love and enjoy your passion, you can’t run a business if no one wants what you’re selling or is willing to pay for it.
That’s why it’s vital that you validate your business idea. The first step is to know the difference between customer needs and customer wants.
Customer Needs
The way you run your business will be based on what your customers need. You are trying to solve a problem or ease a pain that makes people want to buy something.
The good news is that needs are easier to spot than wants because they are so important to customer success.
Customer Wants
These could be features or key differences that set you apart from your competitors and help you win over customers who are still deciding, but they don’t have to be deal-breakers.
The best business idea and product should meet both people’s needs and their wants. When making decisions, needs should come first because they are so important to customer success. Then go above and beyond for your customers by making sure your product or service is exactly what they want.
3. How will you position yourself?
The third thing we look at is how you put yourself in the market.
When thinking about turning your passion into a business you need to answer these 4 questions:
- Who do you want to serve?
- What do my potential customers need help with?
- How can that problem be solved?
- Why would people buy what I have to sell?
Now that you know the answers to your questions, you’re ready to make a value statement that will define how you will position yourself. This is often called a “value proposition” or “unique selling proposition.”
The simplest formula for a value statement I’ve seen is: “We help [X] do [Y] doing [Z].“
For example, “We help [who you want to serve] do [what your customers need help with] doing [what you offer to solve their problem].”

So, putting these three things together is what lets you turn your passion into a business.
